GALESBURG, MI (WTVB) – Did you feel the earthquake early Saturday afternoon? Did you know that Michigan’s strongest ever quake happened just north of Coldwater in August 9, 1947?
You can travel to the spot in rural Kalamazoo County south of Galesburg that was the epicenter for Saturday’s rare Michigan earthquake shortly before 12:30 p.m. but there are no signs that anything took place there. That’s because the United States Geological Service says it occurred in rock formations 4-miles underground in a fault that even they didn’t know about.
Geophysicist John Bellini says the most powerful in Michigan history occurred in 1947 near Coldwater and measured 4.6. The scale used to measure earthquakes increases ten-fold with every number, for comparison the quake that hit Nepal last month, at 7.8 was about 10,000 times more powerful than our weekend quake at 4.2.
Michigan State Police say no injuries were reported from the quake and there was little damage.
