COLDWATER, MI (WTVB)- The No vote won the day in the Coldwater School District and also across Michigan in the resounding rejection of Proposal One with a mostly light turnout for Tuesday’s elections. The pair of bond issues for Coldwater schools were both defeated by wide margins. The first proposal that would have raised $46.5 million to build a new facility to replace Lakeland Elementary and pay for other building upgrades and update technology and safety lost 3,508 to 1,365.
The second bond request to generate $10 million, mostly for a 900 seat auditorium at Coldwater High School, lost by an even wider margin 3,732 to 1,156. Coldwater School Superintendent Dr. Tina Kerr said she was surprised by the large margin of defeat because she felt there wasn’t anything else district officials could have done to communicate and get the facts out to the public that something must be done for kids who need better facilities and technology. Kerr said it’s now time to regroup and figure out what comes next.
In the Union City School District, voters yesterday passed a sinking fund building and site renewal levy 294-174 and county residents who are part of the Reading School District in Hillsdale County helped in the passage of a building and site sinking fund renewal which was approved 516-246.
