IONIA, MI (WTVB) – He literally drank himself to death while prison guards watched. Now the family of Kenneth Dalstra is suing the Michigan Department of Corrections for his death a year ago in April in the MDOC facility at Ionia. His beverage of choice was water. Because he was a diagnosed schizophrenic, he drank it compulsively until he died from water intoxication. Guards turned it off for a while, but then turned the water back on. The suit calls it deliberate indifference.
