COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, yesterday in baseball, Quincy split their Big 8 doubleheader at home with Reading with the visiting Rangers winning the opener 11-3 before the Orioles beat Reading in the nightcap 18-0. In the first game, Bryce McCavit took the loss and Quincy left a dozen runners on base. Chase Cook had three hits including a triple with three RBI’S. Josh Clark also had three hits. In the five-inning second game, Clark tossed a three-hitter for the Oriole’s victory. Quincy’s 16 hit attack included three hits and two RBI’s apiece for Cook and Jake Jodway while Hunter Haylett also had three hits with two doubles and three RBI’s. Jake Rider had four RBI’s with two hits. Quincy is now 5-3 in the conference and 16-9 overall.
And Bronson dropped a doubleheader at Mendon 5-4 and 6-4. The losing pitchers were Daniel McMichael and Coty Bennett. In game one, Noah Roberts had three hits and three RBI’s and he added two more hits in the second game. The Vikings’ record slips to 7-13 overall and 2-4 in the BCS East. Yesterday in softball, Quincy split at home with Reading, losing the opener 4-2 before winning the second game 5-2. In game one, Hannah Economou was the tough luck loser with eight strikeouts while Kaylin Oliver had two hits. In the Quincy victory in the nightcap, Nicole Jodway had two hits. The split leaves the Orioles with a 6-2 record in the Big 8.
Also in the Big 8, Union City split a home with Jonesville. In the first game, the Chargers fell to Jonesville 1-0. Marissa Mead took the loss with a four-hitter. Union City then took the nightcap 18-8 with Mead earning the victory. Skyler Herman had three hits with an RBI, Emma Elgan had two hits and three RBI’s and Ciera Davis also had three RBI’s with a hit. The Chargers’ conference record is now 5-3.
And Bronson swept a doubleheader at Mendon 9-0 and 7-4. Skyler Sobeski won both games on the mound for the Lady Vikings with a one hitter in the opener when she also had a double and a single and two RBI’s. In the second game, Kinslea Blouin and Payton Robinson each had two singles and an RBI. Bronson improved to 19-5 overall and 6-0 in the BCS East.
Last night in Girls soccer, in the Independent Soccer League at Quincy, the Orioles and Springport played to a 1-1 tie and then Springport won the extra point for the league with a 4-3 overtime shootout victory. It was a scoreless first half, even though Quincy outshot Springport 17-3. Cailyn Cook scored off a cross from Payton Hines at the 14 minute mark of the second half to break the deadlock in the Orioles favor before Springport answered with just 3:03 left to tie the match at 1-1. Haley Askew had 3 saves in goal for Quincy, which outshot Springport on the night 27-6. The Orioles’ record in the ISL is 4-2-1 with their overall mark at 6-6-2.
And last night in track at Coldwater, the Cardinals split with Harper Creek with a Coldwater victory in the Boys meet while the Beavers took the Girls meet. Logan Targgart was a double winner in the shot put and discus while for the Lady Cardinals, Hannah Parrish finished first in the discus.
