COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Rain shortened the day Friday for some high school sports events around Branch County, the Coldwater baseball and softball teams were able to win the opening games of their doubleheaders against Harper Creek before the storms moved in.
Martin Johnson picked up the win in relief as the Cardinal baseball team beat the Beavers 5-4. Morgan Sims and Brendan Spangler had 2 hits apiece.
Quincy took both ends of their Big 8 doubleheader with Union City, winning 10-0 and 5-3.
The Coldwater softball team beat Harper Creek 8-4 in the opening game of their scheduled doublheader. Darlene Horn got the win by allowing just 6 hits with 2 strikeouts as the Lady Cardinals improved to 7-2 in the Interstate Eight Conference and 16-5 overall.
Union City and Quincy split their softball doubleheader, with the Lady Chargers winning the first game 6-4, while Quincy took the nightcap 3-0.
In high school golf, Coldwater put up its best team score of the season with a 315 but that was only good enough for 6th place in the Lakeview Spartan Invitational because it was such a strong field. Battle Creek Lakeview won the event firing a 303, with Grand Ledge and Caledonia close behind at 305. Holt shot a 307 with Portage Central shooting a 308.
Coldwater was led by Nolan Duda with a 76 which tied him with 8 others for 10th place. Stephan Boston and Keagan Dwyer each had 79’s, Nick Galliers and Cam Ruge fired 81’s and Jacob Fair carded an 82 to round out Coldwater’s scoring.
In middle school tennis, the Coldwater “B” team beat Harper Creek 6-2.Coldwater beat Harper Creek Friday night, 6-2. Singles winners were Stuart Sobeski, Merna Yaldo, and Madisyn Morgan. Doubles team winners were Mae Blansit and Emma Moore, Allison Caswell and Morgan Rakoske,and Elloree Madden and Bryn Niedzwiecki.
