COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, yesterday in baseball, Coldwater split a non-conference doubleheader at Battle Creek Lakeview. The Cardinals dropped the opener 12-5 with Addison Duda the losing pitcher. Brandon Lewis had 2 of Coldwater’s five hits with a pair of doubles while Nicholas Shaw had a double with three RBI’s and Jimmy Johnston had a 2-run homer.
The Cardinals bounced back to win the nightcap 3-2. Jordan Butler picked up the victory while Randall Linton earned the save. Brendan Spangler and Linton had 2 hits apiece while Bryce Barringer and Morgan Sims each had a hit with an RBI. Coldwater’s record is now 26-8.
The JV Cardinals also split with Lakeview. The Spartans won the opener 13-8 with Collin Torrey taking the loss while Austin Butler had a triple, double, and single with 3 RBI’s. Coldwater beat Lakeview in the nightcap 5-4 in eight innings. Cameron Barnes picked up the victory with 5 innings of one run relief work. Torrey had two doubles as the JV team finished their season with a 29-5 record.
Yesterday in softball, it was a sweep for Coldwater at Lakeview 6-5 and 12-3. The winning pitchers were Darlene Horn and Stacy Guzy. Payton Watson and Jamie Wellet had two hits apiece and Morgan Howard had a home run. In the second game, Watson went 4-for-4 while Howard added another home run and a double. Also with 2 hits apiece were Kendall Galloway and Drue Mullin. The Lady Cardinals improved to 25-7.
The JV softball team also took 2 from Lakeview with a pair of five inning victories 16-6 and 15-1. Emma Stanley and Cheyenne Akers were the winning pitchers. In game one, Alyson McKinley had 2 singles and 2 RBI’s while Carly Duke and Zoe Nowicki each had a single and 2 RBI’s. In the second game, McKinley added three singles and 3 RBI’s to help them wrap up their season with a 27-4 record.
In boys golf yesterday, Coldwater opened state tournament play and qualified for the Regionals with their fifth place finish in the Parma Western Division Two District at the Arbor Hills Golf Club. The top 6 teams advance from district action and Coldwater stayed alive with a team score of 345. East Lansing won the event with a 310. The Cardinals were led by Cam Ruge with an 81, Stephen Boston had an 87, Keagan Dwyer shot an 88, Nathan Waterbury carded an 89 and Nolan Duda a 91. Next Wednesday’s Regional will be hosted by Harper Creek at Binder Park.
In the Division Four District hosted by Bronson at the Bella Vista Golf Club, neither Bronson nor Union City were able to advance to the Regionals, although Union City’s David Katz was an individual qualifier, finishing with a fifth place score of 95.
There’s just one event on today’s high school sports schedule with Quincy playing at Clinton in an ISL Divisional crossover game.

In middle school sports yesterday, in co-ed tennis, the Coldwater B team beat visiting Harper Creek 7-1.
