COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, the second season starts today with MHSAA District tournament play in baseball, softball and Girls soccer. In baseball and softball, Union City is the only county school that is on today’s schedule with the Chargers’ pre-district games against Delton-Kellogg at the Bronson Division 3 District.
Coldwater, Quincy and Bronson all drew first round byes and won’t see action until Saturday’s semi-finals. That’s when Coldwater takes on Marshall at the Harper Creek Division 2 District while in Division 3, Quincy plays Hillsdale at the Hanover Horton Division District and Bronson hosts Parchment. The District title winners advance to the Regionals on June 6th.
In girls soccer, it’s Coldwater at Eaton Rapids at 6 p.m. tonight in the first round of the Eaton Rapids Division 2 District. The winner moves on to Thursday’s semifinals with the district title match set for Saturday. And Quincy plays in the Adrian Lenawee Christian Division 4 District, taking on host Lenawee Christian tonight at 6 p.m.
Also on the high school schedule for today, it’s the annual Branch Area Best Track meet, being hosted this year by Quincy.
The regular season wrapped up on Saturday for some teams in baseball and softball. In baseball, Coldwater won the Hillsdale Invitational, defeating the host Hornets in the championship game 9-4 after beating Morenci 15-0 in four innings in the semifinals. Against Hillsdale, Randall Linton was the winning pitcher while Nicholas Shaw had a home run and a double and 4 RBI’s. Sean Printke earned the victory against Morenci. Austin Krzeminki went 3-for-3 with 2 doubles and an RBI. The Cardinals improved their record to 26-8.
Also in baseball, at the Bronson Polish Classic, Union City lost 12-0 to Parchment and then the Chargers bounced back to beat Bronson 4-2.
In the softball Polish Classic, host Bronson won the tournament, opening with a 3-0 win over Vicksburg before beating Buchanan 5-0. Skyler Sobeski picked up both wins on the mound. She helped her own cause with a home run and a single against Vicksburg and added 2 mores singles vs. Buchanan. Also in the second game, Kinslea Blouin had home run and single and 3 RBI’s. Bronson improved their record to 29-7.
