The opening week of the MHSAA baseball and softball state tournament continued yesterday with several pre-district games that were postponed by rain on Tuesday. In baseball, Union City’s season ended when the Chargers lost 6-3 to Delton Kellogg at the Bronson Division 3 District where they finished up their contest that was suspended by the showers on Tuesday. Seth Bruce suffered the defeat on the mound while Garret Mead had two RBI’s with a single. Union City’s final record was 16-19 including a 7-7 mark in the Big Eight for fifth place in the conference. In softball, Union City has moved on to Saturday’s semifinals after Delton-Kellogg yesterday forfeited their pre-district game at Union City. They were going to try and finish the contest which was suspended Tuesday in the middle of the fourth inning with Union City due up in the bottom of the frame with a 13-to-1 lead over the Panthers. However, the rains returned yesterday afternoon, making the field unplayable and Delton Kellogg decided with the deficit they faced, it was best not to make a third trip to Branch County this week, thus the forfeit outcome.
There was some non-tournament baseball action on Wednesday including Coldwater sweeping a doubleheader over St. John’s 4-3 and 11-3. In the opener, Brandon Lewis picked up the victory in relief while Randall Linton earned a save. Brendan Spangler went 3-for-5 and scored a run while Lewis had 2 hits including a home run with 2 RBI’s.
