COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A pair of significant events in the timeline of the new Dr. Robert W. Browne Aquatic Center in Coldwater are close at hand. The facility, which is owned by the city and leased to the Coldwater School District, opened in February. Swimming as a competitive sport for Coldwater High School will be introduced tonight at the Aquatic Center and early interest appears to be strong.
CHS begins the process with an intra-squad meet at 6 p.m. and 56 swimmers have signed up for the event. It will be used to create seed times for the upcoming inaugural season next fall. There will be an official on hand this evening, a starter, and timers with results shown on the scoreboard. Admission is $3.00. It’s not yet known if swimming at the high school in the first year will be a club sport or an official team program. The school system is currently looking to hire a swimming coach.
Tomorrow, the public is invited to the official dedication ceremony for both the Aquatic Center and the city’s expanded Heritage Park Recreation Center. The projects were made possible by a $15-million gift from Dr. Browne, a Coldwater native and a member of the CHS Class of 1942.
Dr. Browne is scheduled to speak at the ceremony along with city and school officials. It gets underway at the Rec Center on Heritage Park Drive at 2:30 p.m. Friday and concludes at 3 p.m. with a cake and cookies reception.
