QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, the only action on Thursday saw the season end for Quincy girls soccer as the Orioles lost a heartbreaker at home 4-3 in an overtime shootout to Clinton in a state tournament Division 4 District semifinal match. Quincy led 3-1 at the half on a pair of goals from Liz Counterman and one goal from Mackenzie Moore. Assisting on Counterman’s goals were Gaby Masson and Cailyn Cook while Cailyn Hines got the assist on the goal by Moore.
The Orioles kept Clinton in check in the second half until the Redskins scored at the 5:02 mark and then tied the game at 3-3 with 1:47 remaining to send it into overtime. After a scoreless first ten minute overtime, Quincy’s Payton Hines found the net on an assist from Counterman at the 7:02 mark. 3 minutes later, Clinton tied the game on a penalty kick and then the Redskins captured the victory in the overtime shootout. Quincy outshot Clinton on the night 25-19 while Haley Askew had 15 saves in goal for the Orioles, who finished the season with a 9-10-and-2 record.
In Division Two, the team that eliminated Coldwater on Tuesday, Eaton Rapids, went down to defeat last night as the host Greyhounds fell 4-0 to Marshall. The Redhawks victory sends Marshall onto the district title game tomorrow against Mason.
The second season in spring sports takes a break today in advance of a busy Saturday coming up tomorrow when district championships will be decided in baseball and softball along with the MHSAA Track and Field Finals. Coldwater’s baseball and softball teams have semifinal games against Marshall in the Harper Creek Division 2 District.
In Division 3, Quincy’s semifinal opponent will be Hillsdale at the Hanover Horton District. And in the District tournament at Bronson, the host Vikings will face Parchment in the semifinals. Union City’s baseball team was eliminated by Delton Kellogg in their Bronson pre-district game this week while the Union City softball team will take on Galesburg-Augusta tomorrow in the semifinals.
Tomorrow’s track finals will feature 17 individual qualifiers from Branch County along with 4 relay teams from county schools.
