MIDLAND, MI (WTVB) – Should the “Pure Michigan” tourism campaign be a “sacred cow” when it comes to not touching its funding? The Mackinac Center for Public Policy, the Midland-based conservative think tank, doesn’t think so. Preliminary findings from a forthcoming study show that, during a 40-year period through 2012, every dollar spent on tourism promotion only generated an extra penny in economic activity for the accomodations industry and was “more than completely offset by taxpayer losses.”
There is talk in Lansing about diverting some of “Pure Michigan” funding into road rebuilding.
