COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Heavy rain and quarter inch to half inch hail was reported in Coldwater around 4:30 Monday afternoon as thunderstorms moved across parts of Branch County. There was a 14-degree drop in the temperature with the passage of the storms with 77 degrees the reading at 4:15 p.m. and then it was 62 degrees 20 minutes later.
There were no watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service during the period and no calls were listed on the Branch County 9-1-1 log related to the storm activity. Shortly after 5 p.m., a 65 mph thunderstorm wind gust was measured 3 miles east of Hillsdale.
Another line of thunderstorms moved across the area early Monday evening. In northeast Indiana, Steuben County Communications activated tornado sirens countywide around 6:30 pm. Authorities said the sirens were sounded after several reports of rotating clouds, one in the Mongo area, and one just several miles south of Angola. There were several reports of trees down but there was no major damage.
