COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, the Most Valuable Player of this season’s Coldwater softball team is junior Payton Watson. The honor was announced at this week’s annual Coldwater softball awards banquet. Other team awards went to Michaela Gillette-Golden Glove and Most Spirited, Jamie Wellet-Outstanding Outfielder, Morgan Howard-Big Stick, and Coaches Award-Gabrielle Seiler.
Named to the Interstate Eight Academic All-League team were Jamie Wellet, Drue Mullin, Gabby Milnes, Alyson McKinley, Darlene Horn and Stacy Guzy. The I-8 All-League team included Watson, Wellet, and Gillette while honorable mention were Howard, Horn, and Kendall Galloway. All-District honors were earned by Wellet, Howard, and Galloway with honorable mention for Watson, Guzy, and Milnes. And for the third straight year, Gillette was named the All-Regional team’s third baseman. Also selected All-Region were catcher Payton Watson, outfielder Jamie Wellet and Gabby Milnes for Designated Player.
Coldwater was the Conference Champion for the inaugural season of the Interstate Eight and also won a district title on their way to a final record of 29-8.
The softball season wraps up this weekend with the MHSAA state tournament semifinals and finals tomorrow and Saturday at Michigan State University. The Bronson Lady Vikings will be playing in Friday’s Division 3 semifinals, taking on Montague at 5:30 p.m. We’ll have live coverage of tomorrow’s Bronson game on the radio with our broadcast beginning at 5:15 p.m. Saturday’s Championship contest is also scheduled for 5:30 p.m. at MSU.
