ORLAND, IN (WTVB) – An 8-year old boy from Orland and a 52-year old man from Ontario, Canada were killed in separate traffic accidents Sunday in Steuben County, Indiana. Sheriff’s deputies identified the youth who died near Orland as Ulises Munoz. They say he was struck after he rode his bicycle out into the roadway from a private drive into the path of a pickup truck.
The collision was reported around 8:15 p.m. Sunday night on County Road 700 North west of State Road 327. Munoz was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies say the pickup was driven by 55-year old Bucky Sterling of Orland. He was unhurt. The accident remains under investigation.
Sunday morning about 2:25 a.m., Canadian resident Brian Platten died when the motorcycle he was driving north of Ashley on I-69 was rear ended by an SUV. He was ejected off the bike and was found by deputies lying along the shoulder of the road. Platten, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The car driver, 36-year old Chet Gilbert of Ashley, escaped injury but was taken to Cameron Hospital in Angola for an anxiety attack. Alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash which remains under investigation.
