CHARLOTTE, NC (WTVB) – NASCAR supports removing the Confederate flag from the South Carolina State Capitol, but won’t prevent fans from flying the flag at race events. A statement issued yesterday said NASCAR discourages using the flag, but they won’t be banned at their race venues.
The flag has been a polarizing symbol since pictures of Charleston, South Carolina church shooter Dylann Roof wearing a Confederate flag T-shirt began surfacing on the Internet. Roof shot nine African-American church goers last week. On Monday, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley called for the flag to be removed from the Capitol grounds.
The Confederate flag is often associated with white supremacists, but is also revered by many as a part of southern heritage.
