UNDATED (WTVB) – Did you know Americans throw away about $640 worth of food each year? A new survey released today shows that 76-% of the 1,000 adullts asked threw away leftover food at least once a month, and 53% threw out food once a week.
The Environmental Protection Agency says food waste makes up 20% of what’s in the garbage dump, and it releases greenhouse gas as it rots. The new study shows that Americans do care about wasted food, but not about its environmental impact. Of those polled, 45% said they were bothered by wasted food because there are hungry people in the world. Only 15% said they were concerned about the environmental impact of wasted food.
