COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Gas prices spiked 45 cents a gallon yesterday across most of Branch County and will continue to drive higher through the week in Michigan and neighboring Great Lakes States, despite having the lowest crude oil prices since the great recession at under $44 a barrel.
Gas Buddy’s Patrick Dehaan says a shut down at BP’s Whiting, Indiana refinery is the reason. It’s the biggest in the Midwest. He expects prices at the pump, now up to around $2.70 a gallon could peak at over $3 a gallon by the weekend.
Dehaan says the good news is he is still expecting prices to dip below $2 a gallon this fall and stay there for a while.
