COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, the Coldwater boys varsity soccer team improved to 1-2 on the season last night with a 2-1 win at Kalamazoo Central. Mana Ahmed had a goal in each half for the Cardinals, the first assisted by Wageeh Saeed and the second by Fadel Said as Coldwater outshot Kalamazoo Central 16-9.
The Maroon Giants lone goal came on a penalty kick with 19 minutes to play. Waheeb Ahmed made 7 saves in goal while Balal Nasser made 3. The Cardinals have their home opener tomorrow night against Hastings.
The Coldwater JV team earned a 10-2 mercy rule victory yesterday in their season opener at Kalamazoo Central. Nasser Nagi led the scoring for the Cardinals with 3 goals. Mohammed Nagi and Mohsen Saleh had two goals apiece while Jon Brownell, Mohammed Salem and Shadi Alisaid each added a goal. Coldwater outshot Kalamazoo Central 23-3 and Alex Schaale had one save in goal.
Monday night in volleyball, Coldwater played a in a round robin tournament at Vicksburg with five matches and finished the evening with four splits and one loss. It was a last minute addition to the schedule for Coldwater to replace tomorrow’s Delton-Kellogg Invitational, which had to be cancelled because they’re still installing a new floor at the high school. Coldwater last night split with Parchment, St. Joseph, and Stevensville-Lakeshore and then fell 2-0 to Delton-Kellogg, dropping each game 23-25. The Lady Cardinals ended the tournament splitting with Vicksburg. On the night for Coldwater, Jasmine Wellet had 26 kills, Izzy Foley had 27 digs, and Jamie Wellet had 61 digs along with 8 aces and 4 solo blocks. Coldwater’s record is now 2-2-and-4 and they return to action Saturday at Battle Creek in the Cereal City Classic while their first home match will be next Monday against Holt.
Yesterday in Girl’s golf, Coldwater finished in fourth place out of 16 teams in the Hanover Horton Invitational at the Cascades Golf Course. Coldwater had a team score of 437 which was one stroke behind third place Pickney. Jackson Lumen Christi won the event with a 385. Coldwater was led by Madison Donbrock, who shot a 97 which was good enough for seventh place overall. Haley Linton had a 102, Jayla Goodwin carded a 118, Gabby Boston fired a 120 and Claire Sheppard rounded out the scoring for the Lady Cardinals with a 125. Coldwater travels tomorrow to Binder Park for the first Interstate Eight Jamboree of the season.
In JV golf on Monday, Coldwater hosted Sturgis, Battle Creek Lakeview and Harper Creek in a match at the Coldwater Golf Course and the Lady Cardinals came away with a second place finish. Sturgis won the event with a team score of 213 while Coldwater shot a 243. Leading the way for Coldwater were Molly Smith and Micki Slack, who each shot a 56.
Today in high school sports, in Boys tennis, it’s Bronson at the Hillsdale Invitational and in cross country, Union City runs at Three Rivers in the Big Hill Invitational.
