COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A Coldwater family was fortunate to escape injury early today when a kitchen fire broke out while there were no working smoke detectors in the house. The Coldwater Fire Department was called around 12:10 a.m. Tuesday to the residence at 140 East Pearl Street. Smoke was showing when firemen reached the scene and they found everyone was outside the home.
According to the fire department, the blaze got started when a baby bottle warmer in the kitchen shorted out. A person awake at the time noticed several light fixtures were flickering and went to check out a fuse box when he discovered the fire. They were able to put it out before the fire department arrived. There was smoke damage and minor damage to the kitchen floor.
The home is owned by Farouk Abdulah and being rented by Ali Ali. The fire department was on the job until 1 a.m. and they say the incident is a good reminder to periodically check your smoke detectors to be sure they’re in proper working condition.
