LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Michigan House Republican Cindy Gamrat made her last statement as she was packing up her office yesterday at the State Capitol, once again apologizing for her mistakes and offering to do what she can to make amends. She says it’s now time to turn her attention to her family. Gamrat is now only the fourth Michigan State Representative in history to be expelled for misconduct after the House voted to turn her out of office in the wee hours of Friday morning.
Gamrat and Todd Courser, her fellow GOP lawmaker and partner in an extramarital affair who resigned his seat early yesterday, are now the subjects of twin investigations by the Michigan Attorney General and the State Police to determine if any of her or Courser’s activities in office amount to criminal violations. There is no telling how long the probe might take. The attorneys for the pair of Representatives say they see no grounds for charges, but then they are paid to say that. Other lawyers say the misuse of taxpayers funds, making false police reports and election law misdemeanors are all possible violations that might be pursued in court.
