BRONSON, MI (WTVB) – The Dollar General Literacy Foundation has awarded Bronson Community Schools a $4,000 grant to support youth literacy. 2nd Grade Teacher John Schull made the announcement at last night’s Bronson Board of Education meeting. Schull said the grant is a good fit with their need for technology and utilizing it to increase student literacy levels.
20 Chromebook laptop computers and 20 sets of multi-media stereo headphones with microphones will be purchased with the grant dollars. Also, four classroom licenses for the online reading software RAZ Kids for second graders will be purchased with funds from the Anderson PTO.
Students will take a baseline assessment and then be able to log-on to RAZ to read appropriate-level books. Teachers will have the ability to measure reading fluency levels through the software as well. RAZ can be accessed from any internet connection or smartphone, so parents can also become involved in their student’s reading improvement.
Since its inception in 1993, the Dollar General Literacy Foundation says it has awarded more than $100 million in grants to nonprofit organizations, helping nearly six million individuals take their first steps toward literacy or continued education
