COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In boys high school soccer Thursday, Coldwater was a winner in a varsity only Interstate 8 Conference match on the road with the Cardinals topping Pennfield 8-0. The game ended with 21 minutes to play on the mercy rule.
Mana Ahmed had 3 goals and 2 assists. Wageeh Saeed had 3 goals, while Yones Mussa and Ali Naji each had one. Fadel Said had 4 assists, while Abdul Saied and Sean Delaney each had one. Balal Nasser and Cameron Barnes shared time in goal but had no saves, as Coldwater out shot Pennfield 25-0. The Cardinals record is now 7-3-1 and they’ll host Sturgis for non-conference action Saturday, with the JV game at 10 a.m. and the varsity at 11:45 a.m.
The Coldwater JV Boys soccer squad stayed undefeated last night with a 3-2 win at Three Rivers. Shuaib Aljabaly had 2 goals with one goal for Moshen Saleh. The Cardinals improved to 8-0 as they outshot the host Wildcats 18-4 with 3 saves in goal for Alex Schaale.
Last night in volleyball, Union City beat visiting Bellevue 3-0. Haley McIntosh had 10 kills, Emma Hoppe had 6 digs, and Carley Robertson had 7 assists and 8 aces. The non-conference win improved the Charger’s record to 10-8-2. Union City won the JV match 2-0 with 7 assists for Alexis George.
In boys junior varsity tennis yesterday, Coldwater travelled to Sturgis and beat the Trojans 4-3. Winners for the Cardinals were Sam Morrison and Hernan Ochoa Polanco at third and fourth singles along with Dillon Gagnon and Blake Yates at second doubles and Brendan Hanna and Joe Hicks at third doubles.
Mother Nature might be the toughest opponent tonight for Branch County’s varsity football teams with thunderstorms likely. Undefeated Coldwater will try to improve to 4-0 as they host Parma Western in an Interstate Eight Conference contest set for 7 p.m at Cardinal Field. Elsewhere, in the Big Eight, Quincy hosts Athens and Union City hosts Springport while Bronson has a non-conference game at home against Comstock. In 8-Man Football, Tekonsha plays tomorrow at Portland St. Patrick.
There was reserve football action last night including Quincy’s junior varsity winning 20-14 at Climax-Scotts. Rushing for touchdowns for Quincy were Luke Rufenacht, Brandon Harrison and Joel Roush. Leading the defense with 13 tackles was Kenny Cox.
Also on today’s high school sports schedule, besides the football, there’s girls golf with Coldwater hosting 17 teams for the Lady Cardinal Invitational at the Coldwater Golf Course. And in cross country, Coldwater will compete in the Spartan Invitational in East Lansing at Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East Golf Course.

In middle school sports yesterday, in volleyball, Coldwater played at Pennfield with a split in the 8th grade matches with a win for the 7th grade A team. Coldwater won the 8th grade A match 2-1. Olivia Foley had 20 points while Jasmine Coppess had 3 assists and Carlee Crabtree had 2 kills. Pennfield won the B match 2-0. Madison Shiery and Alli Caswell led Coldwater with 6 serves each while Shiery had 2 kills. The Lady Cardinals beat Pennfield 3-0 in the 7th grade A match with 3 aces apiece for Kaia Donay and Mia Rzepka. Meg Smith had 3 Digs and Rzepka added 3 kills.
