ATLANTA, GA (WTVB) – Did you get a shot last fall and still have the flu bug bite you? Well, this year’s flu vaccines should be more effective than last year’s. Officials with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday that flu vaccines available in North America this year are a good match to the flu viruses that are actually going around. The new batch of flu shots and mists now includes protection against the H3N2 virus that broke out during last year’s flu season.
Last year’s vaccine was only 23% effective because it didn’t protect against the H3N2 strain. The CDC says flu experts have scrutinized about 200 specimens collected over the summer in the U.S., and found a majority of those specimens were H3N2 viruses that are vulnerable to this year’s vaccines.
