COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The City of Coldwater and Coldwater Community Schools continue to brainstorm on the best way to replace the city’s aging tennis courts which are nearly 40 years old and in terrible shape. The city owned courts at Heritage Park are used for Coldwater Recreation Department activities while Coldwater high school and middle school sports teams and physical education classes use the courts at no cost to the school district.
Coldwater School Superintendent Terry Boguth recently told the Board of Education the courts are not going to last another year and she felt the school district has a responsibility for the courts if they want to continue to use them. Options under consideration include repairing the courts, replacing them with new asphalt courts or concrete courts and there’s also a decision on whether to continue with the 8 courts or expand to 10 courts.
Preliminary cost estimates for new facilities range from $485,000 for the asphalt up to as much as $800,000 for concrete and that price tag includes lightning and fencing. Also in the discussions with new courts is possibly shifting their location to school property and there’s community fund raising for such a project that likely will be included.
The city is in search of a sign from the school district to indicate if they are ready to partner up with the city going forward with the future of the courts hanging in the balance. So obviously a lot on the table to be looked at before any final decisions are made.
