COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, yesterday in state tournament girls golf, Coldwater qualified for next week’s MHSAA Finals with their third place finish in the Lakewood Lake Odessa Division 3 Regional at the Centennial Acres Golf Course. Coldwater saved their best effort of the year to advance in the post season with Wednesday’s team score of 392. The top 3 schools in the 14 team field moved on to the finals and the third place Lady Cardinals were eight shots better than fourth place Parma Western. The winning score yesterday was 355 posted by Hastings with Lakewood coming in 2nd at 363.
Coldwater’s strength came from their consistency with Haley Linton shooting a 94, Madison Donbrock had a 98, Gabriel Boston and Claire Sheppard each carded a 100 and Jayla Goodwin rounded out the scoring with a 103. The Division 3 Finals are Friday and Saturday, October 16 and 17 at the Forest Akers West Course at Michigan State University.
Last night in volleyball, Coldwater rallied for a five game Interstate Eight Conference victory at Jackson Northwest. The Lady Cardinals dropped the first two games 22-25, 21-25 before winning the next two 25-14, 25-10 and then clinched the match with a 17-15 decision in the fifth game. Coldwater had a great serving night with 6 girls serving at 100% and a team total for the match at 96.3%. Drue Mullin led the way in aces with 4 along with a team-high 12 kills. Mullin and Jasmine Wellet shared the lead in digs with 15 each and Jasmine also had a team-high 4 blocks. Jamie Wellet was tops in assists with 30. Coldwater improved to 2-2 in the conference and 11-14-5 overall. Coming up Saturday, Coldwater hosts the Lady Cardinal Invitational.
Coldwater made it a sweep last night winning both of the reserve matches by 2-0 scores. In the junior varsity action, Hunter Jenkot and Emilee Smoker had 10 digs apiece while Kaci White had 7 kills. In the freshman match, Mya Tom had 9 aces while Anna Tappenden had 5 kills and 2 blocks.
Today in high school sports, in boys tennis, Coldwater’s Division 3 fifth-ranked Cardinals begin their second season at the MHSAA Sturgis Regional. The Division 3 State Finals are next weekend at Holland. In Girls swimming, it’s a special night for Coldwater’s inaugural season with the program’s first ever home meet as they host Sturgis at the Brown Aquatic Center beginning at 6 p.m.
In volleyball, Class-C top ranked Bronson plays at Cassopolis. In Boys soccer, it’s Quincy at Jonesville. And there’s reserve football tonight with Coldwater at home against Harper Creek with the freshman game starting at 4:30 p.m. followed by the junior varsity at 6:30 p.m. Also in junior varsity action, Quincy hosts Homer and Union City is at Reading.
