BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – No gasoline pump credit card skimmers have been found yet in Branch County, but the locations where the devices that can rob you of cash and your ID are getting closer and closer to the Coldwater area. At least two skimmers have been detected at stations in Calhoun County, the latest at a BP station on Capitol near I-94 in Battle Creek. It’s the first one found in the Cereal City.
As in most of these cases, the digital thieves picked a pump furthest from the cashier’s view and closest to a major highway, such as I-69. There is no way of telling how long it may have been operating at the BP station. Michigan Department of Agriculture officials have started regular sweeps, looking for the devices but there over 100,000 pumps in Michigan and 14 inspectors.
Since the beginning of October, skimmers have been found in pumps in Albion, Ann Arbor and Kentwood. Before that, nearly half a dozen others have turned up in pumps in Mattawan and Kent County.
