COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Fire Department says an overloaded electrical outlet is believed to be what sparked a blaze that caused heavy damage to the interior of a two car garage early Saturday. A neighbor spotted the smoke around 2:45 a.m. coming from the structure next to residence at 187 Grand Street where Drake Macklem lives. He was in the home at the corner of Grand and Alden Streets at the time of the fire and was able to escape injury.
The Coldwater Fire Department had the blaze under control by 3 a.m. while firefighters were able to prevent any damage to the homes on either side of the garage whose contents included a motorcycle. Flammable liquids and aerosol cans added to the fire load as well.
One firefighter suffered a minor knee injury. The Fire Department cleared the scene and returned to station after being on the job for about an hour and a half.
