LANSING, MI (WTVB) – A technology think tank says Michigan can save nearly $290 million over the next five years by embracing technology and automating more government jobs and services. The Information, Technology and Innovation Foundation published the report this week, saying that states would be better off handing pink slips to less productive employees and replacing them with computerized programs that use fewer resources and better overlap with other governmental departments.
They claim the biggest cost savings could be seen at the office support and business operation levels, to the tune of about four percent annually. Big savings could also be seen in offices that deal with social, managerial and legal services. The institute claims that all 50 states could save a combined $11 billion by welcoming new computers and bidding farewell to staffers.
