ANN ARBOR, MI (WTVB) – Two Branch County area men were the center of attention for a few minutes before more than 100,000 people Saturday afternoon at Michigan Stadium. It was during a TV commercial break in the third quarter in Ann Arbor during the Michigan-Michigan State game. 97-year old Lynn “Doc” Munger of Fremont, Indiana, a Navy veteran and Pearl Harbor survivor was honored and he was escorted into the end zone by Phil Wotta of Bronson, his friend and golfing buddy. Everybody calls Munger “Doc”, because in the military he was the Chief Medic on the USS Enterprise. He attended a US Navy medical school and then had served 17 months on the ship before World War Two erupted and was at Pearl Harbor that fateful morning December 7, 1941.
Munger’s picture then and now with a live shot were shown Saturday on the big screen video scoreboard as he was introduced in uniform and the sold out crowd at the game gave him a standing ovation. Munger is an author, a musician, a retired owner of a plant nursery business and a collector of Americana and Native American artifacts. And he sure knows how to pick’em.
“Doc” Munger had never attended a college football game until Saturday.
