COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – A lifer doing time at Lakeland Correctional in Coldwater figured out a way to break the law without ever leaving his cell, with the help of his daughter-in-law. Collectively, they have gotten away with just over a quarter million dollars from Social Security, claiming he was retired for the past decade. The only problem: Inmates don’t qualify for Social Security.
There isn’t much more that can be done to punish 80-year-old David McPeters, who is serving life in prison for gunning down his estranged wife and her aunt in a Portage pizza parlor where they worked in 1982. But his daughter-in-law, Kathryn Ann McPeters, has now been named in a federal indictment for defrauding Social Security. She used her Battle Creek address and had another person pose as her father-in-law to get the retirement payments approved. She kept most of it, but some of it was deposited into his account at the prison so he could buy things at the commissary.
