COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The old smokestack on Coldwater’s west side was left over from the late 1800’s flour mill empire of William Coombs and today, it took less than ten seconds for the 150 foot plus concrete tower to come crashing down. The smokestack demolition on the property off Jay and Pearl streets happened shortly before 12 noon with the surrounding area cordoned off and the Coldwater Police and Fire Departments standing by.
The city received a $65,000 state grant to demolish the tower with the funding from a Blight Elimination Program and the Michigan Land Bank Fast Track Authority. The old smokestack with structural issues was considered dangerous and a safety risk being located next to a section of the city’s Riverside Linear Park trail network.
