JACKSON, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals’ road to Ford Field for the MHSAA Football Finals ended Sunday afternoon, as the Chelsea Bulldogs defeated the Cardinals 35-7 in a semifinal game that was delayed one day after Saaturday’s winter storm.
Chelsea’s defense held Coldwater’s offense to just 141 rushing yards and 158 overall; through the season the Cardinals averaged 313 rushing yards per game. The Bulldogs accumulated 331 total yards for the game, 121 on the ground and 210 through the air, as Chelsea quarterback Jack Bush was 11/12 passing for 194 yards and 4 touchdowns while also rushing for 16 yards and another touchdown on 5 carries.
The Cardinals were led offensively by Joey Severn, who had 6 carries for 46 yards. Sam DeMeester had 8 carries for 40 yards, and Spencer Burns had 5 carries for 25 yards. Our McDonald’s Player of the game, quarterback Luke Beckhusen, had 13 carries for 30 yards and the team’s only touchdown late in the 4th quarter to go with a 2/4 passing performance for 17 yards and 9 tackles to lead the defense.
With the loss, Coldwater’s record for the 2015 season ends at 12-1.
Chelsea will take their 12-1 record to Ford Field Saturday and face off against last year’s Division 3 winner, Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s, who defeated East Grand Rapids 14-7 in Saturday’s Howell semifinal.
