BATTLE CREEK, MI (WTVB) – Two people were seriously injured in a crash between a sport-utility vehicle and a semi truck at 11a.m. Tuesday morning on I-94 just west of the M-66 interchange near Lakeview Square Mall. Austin Cable, 27, of Battle Creek and his passenger, Abbey Frantz, 25, of East Leroy, were flown to a hospital in Kalamazoo by separate medical helicopters. Michigan State Police troopers said both were in serious condition Tuesday afternoon. The couple was westbound on I-94 and looking for a friend who was in a disabled vehicle, according to troopers. The SUV was in the left passing lane and attempted to merge into the right driving lane and collided with a semi that was westbound in the right lane.
The westbound lanes of the freeway were closed from M-66 to Capital Avenue for about two hours, with traffic diverted along Beckley Road. The westbound lanes were reopened shortly before 1 p.m.
