COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The boys high school basketball season tipped off last night while the girls season continued with their second games on the schedule as well. The Coldwater varsity boys started off with a win on the road as the Cardinals beat Battle Creek Lakeview 59-51.
Colin Warner was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater with a game-high 19 points. It was a strong debut for Gage McGuire, the Cardinals’ freshman center who had 9 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Coldwater trailed 20-11 after the opening quarter, but they came back to go ahead 32-29 at the end of the first half. The lead grew to 47-38 heading into the fourth quarter and the Cardinals were steady down the stretch to put away the 8 point victory. Coldwater’s next game is Friday night with their Interstate Eight Conference opener at Marshall.
Last night’s reserve contests at Lakeview were both won by the host Spartans. The Coldwater JV team lost 62-51 with 13 points for Brent Smoker. Lakeview took the freshman game 43-32 with 22 points in the loss for Alonso Wiltse.
In other boys varsity play last night, Bronson lost its opener, falling at home to Homer 68-32. Branson Thenen led the Vikings in defeat with 12 points. Homer also won the JV game 64-43 with 9 points for Caleb Stayner. And Union City started its season with a 58-41 win at Colon.
In girls basketball last night, Coldwater’s record slipped to 1-1 with a 46-34 loss at home to Battle Creek Lakeview. Coldwater’s 10-9 lead at the end of the first quarter was erased by the Spartans who pulled away for the win after going ahead 25-17 at the half. Isabella Foley had 12 points for the Lady Cardinals with 8 points and 9 rebounds for Malorie Rzepka.
There was a split in the reserve action. Coldwater won the JV game 39-34 with 13 points and 9 rebounds for Samantha Rodesiler while Avery Milnes added 10 points and 8 steals. Lakeview prevailed in the freshman game 39-28 despite 22 points and 8 rebounds for Coldwater’s Kelsi Herlan.
Quincy fell to 0-2 with a 54-36 loss last night at Centreville.
Tonight in high school sports, in girls basketball, Union City has a home game against Tekonsha. And the wrestling season opens tonight including Bronson with a quad meet at home. Also, Quincy is at Vandercook Lake with Union City at Colon.
