COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinals best ever high school varsity football season this fall was celebrated last night at the team’s annual banquet. Awards voted on by the team were presented to 7 players recognizing their part in Coldwater’s 12-1 record that featured a number of firsts for the program including an appearance in the MHSAA Division 3 State semi-finals.
Selected Most Valuable Player for the second straight year was Luke Beckhusen. Named Most Valuable Offensive Back was Spencer Burns. Brady Beckhusen was chosen Most Valuable Defensive Lineman. Baylee Hoag was Most Valuable Offensive Lineman, Austin Krzeminski Most Valuable Defensive Back, Jordan Weaver, Most Improved Player, and Brandon Lewis, Most Valuable Linebacker. Next year’s Captains for the 2016 season picked by the team are Sam DeMeester, Jake Beckhusen and Colin Klein.
There were no events scheduled yesterday in Branch County varsity high school sports but there’s girls basketball coming up tonight including a game we’ll have on the radio as Coldwater plays at home in non-conference action against Homer. Our live coverage on AM 1590 and FM 95.5 begins at 7 p.m. with the tip-off set for 7:30 p.m. following the JV game which starts at 6 p.m.
The JV Lady Cardinals last night defeated Parma Western with Coldwater winning 45-41 with 20 points for Samantha Rodesiler, 10 points for Avery Milnes and 10 rebounds for Emilee Smoker.
Elsewhere on tonight’s girls Varsity schedule, Quincy hosts Olivet and it’s Union City at Mendon.
In middle school sports yesterday, in boys basketball, the season ended for Coldwater with wins for the A teams over Jackson Northwest while the B squads went down to defeat to the Mounties. The 8th grade teams played at Jackson and the A team defeated Northwest 48-35 with 15 points for Damon Beckhusen and 13 for Dylan Targgart. The B team lost 40-38 with 14 points for Grey Skudlarick and 14 rebounds for Jacob Carr.
The Coldwater 7th grade A victory at home saw the Cardinals beat Northwest 49-46 with 21 points for Bradey Moore and 11 for Spencer Rodesiler. The Coldwater B team lost 47-12 with 5 points and 4 steals for Ryan Omo and 7 rebounds for Zack Saeed.
The Bronson 8th grade Boys team lost at home last night to White Pigeon 47-14 with 7 points for Graham Eley.
