COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In girls high school basketball Tuesday, Coldwater was a winner at home with a 48-44 non-conference victory over Homer. The Lady Cardinals looked sharp in the first quarter with a 17-9 lead over the visiting Trojans after the opening period but Homer fought back and was down only 29-27 at the half. Coldwater found its stride again after the break and was up by 11 points going into the fourth quarter when Homer’s rally came up short with a triple by the Trojans at the buzzer cutting the final deficit to 4.
Kendall Galloway was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater with 16 points and 5 assists. Malorie Rzepka added 10 points while Tyler Scheid had 9 points and 6 rebounds. Coldwater’s record is now 2-2 with their next game an Interstate Eight Conference contest at home Friday night against Parma Western.
In last night’s junior varsity game, Coldwater beat Homer 48-41 with 28 points for Samantha Rodesiler, including 18 for 22 from the free throw line. Avery Milnes added 12 points in the victory. There was no freshman game.
In other girls varsity contests last night, Quincy fell at home to Olivet 49-23. Cailyn Hines had 8 points in the loss while Zoe Aseltine had 5 rebounds and 4 blocks to go along with her 4 points. Quincy will take an 0-3 record into their Big 8 Conference opener at home Friday night against Homer.
Union City lost 58-33 at Mendon. The Chargers had 25 turnovers in the defeat that dropped their record to 1-3. Rachel Wing had 10 points and Allison Adams added 9 points and 6 rebounds. Union City’s Big 8 opener is on the road Friday against arch-rival Athens.
One other game of note last night with a Boys basketball marathon at Marshall, where the Redhawks outlasted Portland in five overtimes 98-95.
Tonight in high school sports, in wrestling, Coldwater is at Marshall, Quincy travels to Jonesville, Bronson has a BCS Quad meet at Cassopolis, and it’s Senior Night for Union City with the Chargers hosting Athens. And Coldwater opens its gymnastics season at Adrian.
Last night in middle school boys basketball, Bronson’s eighth grade team finished their season with a 37-21 loss at home to Marr-Lee with 12 points for Graham Eley.
