COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in wrestling, Coldwater captured its Interstate State Eight Conference opener with a 60-18 victory at Marshall. Winners for Coldwater were Harwan Alaatre, Shuaib Aljabaly, Hamza Muflihi, Faheem Abdullah, Daniel Pino, Ezra Lewis, Zack Horter, Zach Miller, Jesse Miller, Anthony Nunnally, and Sam DeMeester. The Cardinals next meet is a tournament at home Saturday as they host the Coldwater Classic.
Bronson picked up two wins last night in a quad meet at Cassopolis with the Vikings defeating the host Rangers 37-30 and Berrien Springs 39-36. Going 2-0 on the night for Bronson were Brendan Withington, Tommy Littlefield, Jacob Butters, Ruger Ranney, Isaac Robertson, and David Erwin. The Vikings will be competing on Saturday at the Coldwater Classic.
Union City won its Senior Night match at home over Athens 51-18. Winners for the Chargers included Ben Dart, Dusten Yaudes, Jacob Todd, Colton Johns, Brad Holzer, Garrett Mead, and Tristan Banks. Union City wrestles Saturday at the Eau Claire Invitational.
Wednesday night in gymnastics, Coldwater opened its season on the road with a win at Adrian with the Cardinals beating the Maples 113.375 to 88.400. Senior Amanda Daoud placed first in the All-Around competition with her total of 30.1 earning her three Regional qualifying scores along the way. Sophomores Brooke Neitzert and Sarah Hughes placed 2nd and 3rd in the All-Around category for Coldwater. The meet opened on the uneven bars and Daoud was the event champion collecting a Regional score of 7.375. Second place went to Hughes while Neitzert was third. The Cardinals picked up two Regional qualifying scores on the vault from the efforts of Daoud and Shelby Kahler. Daoud was first with a mark of 8.025 followed by Kahler’s 7.9.
The floor exercise was next and freshman Claire Sheppard led the way with her debut in the routine, earning 8.0 points for first place. Daoud picked up a close second, scoring 7.9 and both earned their first Regional qualifiers in the event. Coldwater finished the competition on the balance beam with Neitzert leading the Cardinals with a second place showing at 6.95 and Daoud third with a score of 6.8. Tara Davis and Sarah Odom were the leading scorers in the junior varsity competition. Next on the schedule for Coldwater is 5thannual Jillian Crist Memorial meet with the Cardinals hosting Saline on January 6th.
Tonight in high school sportsoys basketball, Quincy hosts Homer and Bronson is at home against New Buffalo while the Bronson Girls team plays at New Buffalo. And in boys Swimming and Diving, it’s Coldwater at Adrian.
