COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school boys and girls basketball, Coldwater returned to action after more than 2 weeks off for the holiday break and the Cardinals earned a split in their non-conference varsity games against Kalamazoo Loy Norrix with a Coldwater girls win at home while the boys suffered their first loss of the season at Loy Norrix.
The boys fell in overtime 72-68 with their record dropping to 4-1. The game was tied at 61 heading into the extra period when the Knights prevailed to improve to 4-2. Loy Norrix rallied for the victory by outscoring the Cardinals 22-13 in the fourth quarter. Brady Beckhusen had a game-high 20 points along with 8 rebounds and was our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater. Nate Waterbury added 15 points for the Cardinals. Coldwater’s next game is an Interstate Eight Conference contest Friday at winless Jackson Northwest.
Loy Norrix last night made it a sweep over the Cardinals by winning both of the reserve games. The Coldwater junior varsity lost 65-47 with 19 points for Ryan Murphy. And the freshman Knights beat the Cardinals 49-29 with 13 points for Alonso Wilse.
It was a comeback win for the Coldwater girls, who were down by 12 midway through the third quarter before turning it around for a 12-point victory, beating Loy Norrix 70-58. Freshman Malorie Rzepka scored a game-high 19 points in the win along with 6 steals. Kendall Galloway added 16 points while freshman Tyler Scheid scored 13 points. The Lady Cardinals will take a 4-2 record into the Friday game at Jackson Northwest against the undefeated Mounties.
The Coldwater junior varsity defeated Loy Norrix 53-33 with 20 points for Samantha Rodesiler and 14 for Avery Milnes while Emilee Smoker pulled down 15 rebounds to go along with her 7 points. The Lady Cardinals dropped the freshman game 35-22 with 19 points for Kelsi Herlan.
Elsewhere last night, in girls only games in the Big 8, Quincy lost 54-26 at Jonesville. The winless Orioles had 36 turnovers against the Comet’s pressure defense. Zoe Aseltine had 7 points while Katie Splading added 5 points and 10 rebounds.
Union City used a big third quarter to win at home over Reading 51-38. The visiting Rangers were ahead 22-19 at the break before the Chargers outscored Reading 22-7 to take a 12-point lead into the fourth quarter. Kena Bartlett had a big night in the victory with 20 points and 21 rebounds. Haley Harty added 11 points as Union City improved to 1-1 in the conference and 2-5 overall.
In a boys only game, Tekonsha picked up its first win of the season with a 61-32 victory at Will Carleton Academy. Connor Jenkins had 14 points and 11 rebounds while Anthony Layne also had a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Tonight in high school sports, in wrestling, it’s Coldwater at Harper Creek while Bronson has a BCS Quad meet at Buchanan. Also, Union City has a Quad at Manchester. And in gymnastics, it’s Coldwater at home against Saline for the Jillian Crist Memorial Meet.
