COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Every day, 105 Americans die from suicide. By being aware of the problem and recognizing the signs, lives can be saved. The Branch County Suicide Prevention Coalition’s way of bringing awareness to suicide includes a pair of events happening over the next couple of weeks.
The 2nd annual Hoops for Hope tips off during next Tuesday’s varsity boys basketball game in Coldwater between the Cardinals and the Quincy Orioles. The event will be repeated on February 10 for another cross county contest with the game in Union City where the Chargers will host the Bronson Vikings.
Members of the boys teams will be wearing yellow basketball socks in support of the event, the color of suicide prevention. Students of the rival teams will be conducting a coin challenge, with the winning school receiving the School Spirit plaque during half-time. There will also be Hoops for Hope t-shirts for sale at the door and at the Miss Print shop in Quincy so that fans can also wear yellow.
All donations, including a percentage from the sale of each t-shirt, will benefit the local coalition and its suicide prevention efforts.
