COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports, last night in varsity boys basketball, Union City was a winner at home over Homer 48-32. The Chargers had balanced scoring in the victory led by Colin Kreger with 14 points, Elijah Harris and Elijah Way had 11 points apiece, and Jalen Boes added 10 points and 10 assists. Seth Bruce had a team-high 10 rebounds as Union City improved to 4-1 in the Big Eight and 6-2 overall.
Homer won the JV game 41-24.
In girls basketball last night, Bronson beat visiting Cassopolis 67-27 with 14 points for Payton Robinson while Kiana Mayer had a team-high 8 rebounds along with her 6 points. The Lady Vikings improved to 6-3 overall and 2-2 in the BCS East.
Also in girls hoops, Tekonsha lost 41-21 at Hillsdale Academy.
In reserve boys basketball last night, Coldwater picked up a pair of wins at Charlotte. The Cardinals took the Junior Varsity game 63-59 with 16 points for Ethan Wiley and 13 for Ryan Murphy. And Coldwater pulled out a 51-49 freshman victory with 21 points for Bryce Lafferty, 13 for Austin Roby, and 10 for Michael Kubel.
Thursday in bowling, it was Coldwater at Sturgis with a 24-6 win for the boys team while the girls lost to the host Trojans 21-9. The boys, who improved to 6-0 with the victory, were led by Collin Outwater, with a 220 game. In the girls defeat, Alysia VanWormer rolled a 212.
The Coldwater boys and girls JV bowling teams both won their matches over Sturgis. Vinnie Barone had a 199 for the boys while Sabrina VanAuker led the girls with a 164.
Tonight in high schools sports, in varsity boys and grls basketball, it’s Coldwater at home against Charlotte and we’ll have both of the Interstate Eight Conference contests on the radio with our live coverage starting around 5:30 p.m. following the Evening Journal. The girls game is scheduled to tip-off at 6 p.m. after the JV girls action which begins at 4 p.m. The boys varsity is set for 7:30 p.m.
Also in boys and girls basketball, it’s Quincy at Concord while in a girl’s only game, Union City hosts Homer. Tekonsha has a boys game at home against Hillsdale Academy.
In middle school girls basketball Thursday, Coldwater split their games against Pennfield with wins for the 8th grade Lady Cardinal teams at Pennfield while the 7th grade squads lost in Coldwater to the visiting Panthers. The 8th grade A team beat Pennfield 47-19 with 24 points and 9 rebounds for Carlee Crabtree while Olivia Foley added 11 points and 11 rebounds. The B team defeated the Panthers 19-13 with 11 points for Kaitlyn Meyers.
The 7th grade A team lost 25-23 with 10 points for Mia Rzepka and 9 rebounds for Abby Herman. The B team fell in overtime 28-22 with 8 points for Lacy Janucz.
Bronson earned a pair of wins at Mendon. The Vikings took the 8th grade game 21-18 with 11 points and 17 rebounds for Keona Salesman. Bronson beat Mendon in the 7th grade game 35-2 with 10 points for Maddy Ratkowski.
