QUINCY, MI (WTVB) – In Branch County high school sports last night, in non-conference boys basketball, Quincy lost at home 54-to-50 to Olivet. The Orioles started strong with a 15-7 lead over Olivet at the end of the first quarter but the Eagles erased the deficit and then some, outscoring Quincy 19-4 in the second quarter. The Orioles trailed by 4 entering the final period when both teams put up 15 points and Olivet held on for the victory to improve to 8-5 while Quincy dropped to 7-6. Brandon Gary had 13 points for the Orioles with 11 points apiece for Nathan Karney and Quinn Eifrid.
In another non-league game, Tekonsha went down to defeat 66-38 at Athens. Leading the Indians in the loss were Andy Galliers with 13 points and Connor Jenkins with 12.
In girls basketball last night, Quincy earned its first win of the season and it came on the road over Reading 49-40, reversing a 14 point defeat for the Orioles at home to the Rangers last month. Senior Katie Spalding set a new school rebounding record in the victory for Quincy with 25 boards and made it a double-double with 10 points. Zoe Aseltine had a team high 13 points for the Orioles, who are now 1-9 in the conference and 1-15 overall.
Also in the Big 8, Union City lost at home to Concord 72-24. The Chargers drop to 3-13 overall and 2-8 in the league.
Last night in boys swimming and diving, Coldwater picked up a split in a double dual meet at Harper Creek with the Cardinals getting by Charlotte 76-75 while losing 119-50 to Harper Creek. First place performances for Coldwater were turned in by Andrew Harris in the 200 freestyle; Miguel Bauza in the 200 intermediate; Austin Butler in the 1 meter dive; Jace Arnold in the 500 freestyle; and Trently Dubois in the 100 breaststroke. Tomorrow, it’s Senior Night for Coldwater at the Browne Aquatic Center as the Cardinals host Sturgis and Eaton Rapids.
Tuesday in bowling, it was Senior Night for Coldwater with the Cardinals sweeping to victory over Jackson Northwest at Midway Lanes. The win for the boys squad over the Mounties moved their conference record to 10-0. Shawn Johnson rolled the high score with a 237. The JV boys team also beat Northwest with a 186 for Tristan Furney.
The girls varsity team improved their league record to 8-2 with yesterday’s high score of 200 for Kira Mobley. The Coldwater JV girls are 8-0 with their high score against the Mounties on Tuesday a 129 for Sabrina VanAuker. This afternoon in bowling, the Cardinals travel to Jackson to face Lumen Christi at Airport Lanes while Bronson hosts Sturgis at the Strike Zone.
Tonight in high school sports, in boys basketball, it’s Bronson at Union City as the Chargers host a Branch County Suicide Prevention Coalition Hoops for Hope fundraiser. Last month, in the Hoops for Hope event at Coldwater on January 26th as the Cardinals played Quincy, $476 was raised for the Coalition with donations and the sale of yellow t-shirts to support the cause.
The second season in wrestling starts tonight with MHSAA team districts. In Division Two, Coldwater drew a semifinal bye for their district at Harper Creek and the Cardinals this evening will face the winner of the 6 pm Harper Creek vs. Marshall match in the final. In Division 4 at Bronson, in the semifinals, the host Vikings take on Reading while Quincy goes up against Camden Frontier. The winner of tonight’s final advances to the team Regional at Mendon. Also in Division 4, Union City is at Homer with the Chargers vs the host Trojans in one semifinal with Athens and Galesburg Augusta in the other bracket.
