COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Last night in high school basketball, Coldwater lost both ends of a Senior Night doubleheader, while in boys only action, Quincy and Union City picked up wins and Bronson lost a tight contest.
Harper Creek outscored Coldwater 26-11 in the fourth quarter to turn a 38-27 deficit after three into a 53-49 win for the Beavers. Senior Nate Waterbury led the Cardinals with 16 points, while fellow senior Brendan Spangler had a team-high 7 rebounds and our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Luke Beckhusen, had 8 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. Freshman Gage McGuire added 9 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 blocks as Coldwater falls to 9-9 overall, 6-6 in the Interstate 8 with their sixth loss in their last seven games.
It was Hall of Fame Night at Quincy, and the Orioles responded with a 63-35 win against Springport. Quinn Eifrid had a game-high 23 points, and Nathan Karney had a double-double with 15 points and 10 assists as Quincy improves to 10-6 overall, 8-3 in the Big 8.
Union City posted a 58-40 win at Jonesville behind 19 points from Jalen Boes and 14 from Elijah Harris. The Chargers improve to 13-4 overall, 9-2 in the Big 8.
Bronson lost a tight contest at Centreville 54-52. Noah Roberts had a team-high 14 points, while Luis DePaz added 11 as the Vikings drop to 3-13 overall, 1-8 in the BCS East.
Tekonsha picked up their third win of the season, beating Litchfield 77-67 behind 40 points and 11 rebounds from Anthony Layne. Everett Lewis-Lanphar added 12 points and 6 assists, while Connor Jenkins had a double-double with 10 points and 14 boards as the Indians improve to 3-15 overall, 2-11 in the SCAA.
In girls basketball, Harper Creek outscored Coldwater in the second half 39-25 to turn a 23-19 Cardinal lead into a 58-48 Beaver win. Senior Kendall Galloway, our McDonald’s Player of the Game, scored a team-high 17 points, while follow senior Payton Watson added 8 and freshman Malorie Rzepka had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Coldwater’s record drops to 10-8 overall, 6-6 in the Interstate 8.
On today’s schedule, 17 wrestlers will represent Branch County at the MHSAA Individual Regionals. Coldwater’s two regional qualifiers will be at the Division 2 Regional at Eaton Rapids, Union City’s three regional qualifiers will be at the Division 4 Regional at Kent City, and the remainder – two from Quincy and 10 from Bronson – will stay closer to home and compete at the Division 4 Regional at Bronson. Elsewhere, in gymnastics, Coldwater travels to Tecumseh for the South Central Gymnastics League meet, and in bowling, Coldwater competes in the Interstate 8 Singles Tournament at M-66 Bowl in Battle Creek.
