COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – In high school varsity boys and girls basketball Tuesday, in the Interstate Eight, it was a sweep for Coldwater over Jackson Lumen Christi. At home , the Coldwater boys beat Lumen Christi 75-56. Coldwater had a 31-27 lead at the half and then pulled away by winning the third quarter 20-8 and stayed in command the rest of the way.
Freshman center Gage McGuire had a team-high 19 points for the Cardinals with 16 for Brady Beckhusen and 11 for Zach Murphy while our McDonald’s Player of the Game for Coldwater, senior guard Luke Beckhusen finished with 6 points, 7 assists, and 6 steals. The Cardinals improved to 7-6 in the conference and 10-9 overall while the Titans have yet to pick up their second win. Coldwater ends the regular season and their league schedule on the road Friday at Charlotte.
In last night’s reserve action, the Cardinals lost both games to Lumen Christi with the Titan’s junior varsity beating Coldwater 55-47 with 18 points in the defeat for Ryan Murphy. Coldwater dropped the freshman game in overtime 52-48 with 12 points apiece for Bryce Lafferty and Austin Roby.
In the Coldwater girls varsity win at Lumen Christi, the Lady Cardinals prevailed in a low scoring affair 29-22 over the Titans. The two teams combined to go just 16 for 106 from the floor. Jamie Wellet managed a double-double in the victory with 10 points and 11 rebounds along with 6 steals. Coldwater is now 7-6 in the I-8 and 11-8 overall.
In last night’s JV contest, Coldwater defeated Lumen Christi 55-38 with 24 points for Samantha Rodesiler while Emilee Smoker added 20 points and 13 rebounds. Following Friday’s trip to Charlotte, the Lady Cardinals next week begin post season play and will host an MHSAA Class B District, taking on Paw Paw Monday night at 7:00 p.m. to open the tournament.
Elsewhere last night in girls hoops, in a Branch County matchup at Quincy, the Orioles beat Union City 71-39. Payton Hines had a game-high 18 points in the win while Taylor Holcomb and Zoe Aseltine had 11 points apiece to help Quincy improve to 2-11 in the Big Eight and 2-17 overall. For Union City, Haley Harty and Autumn Carpenter each had 11 points as the Chargers slipped to 3-16 overall and 2-11 in the conference.
In a boys non-conference county contest, Quincy was a winner at Bronson 59-54. The Orioles improved to 11-6 while the Vikings fell to 3-14 with 11 points in defeat for Noah Roberts and 10 apiece for Luis DePaz and Jonah Klingler.
All is quiet on the Branch County high school sports scene tonight with no events scheduled.
In middle schools girls basketball last night, Bronson ended their season with a pair of losses at Sturgis. The host Trojans won the 8th grade game 34-19 with Keona Salesman leading the way for the Vikings with 12 points and 16 rebounds.
Bronson dropped the 7th grade game 20-18 with 6 points for Skye Woodman and 9 rebounds for Brooke Washburn.
