COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – Schools across Branch County sent students home early Wednesday, as a late season winter storm pounded sections of Michigan and the upper Midwest. A Winter Storm Warrning issued by the National Weather Service remains in effect until 4:00 p.m. Thursday.
At one point, the heavy wet snow was falling at a rate of one inch per hour across the Coldwater area. Dozens of events across the region were cancelled. That included some some governmental offices, like the Michigan Secretary of State.
Here’s the latest on the forecast for the Branch County area, as of 3:00 p.m. Wednesday:
- Snow: heavy at times through this evening. Rain or sleet may mix with the snow through mid afternoon.
- Storm Total Snowfall accumulations of 8 to 12 inches expected by late Thursday afternoon. Locally higher accumulations are possible.
- The Heaviest snowfall is expected through this evening.
- North winds of 20 to 30 mph will shift to the northwest tonight and Thursday. Gusts to 35 mph are possible this afternoon into Thursday causing blowing and drifting snow and reduced visibilities, especially in rural areas. Impacts:
- Travel will be hazardous and nearly impossible in some areas.
- Scattered tree and power line damage is likely due to the combination of heavy, wet snow and strong winds leading to power outages.
- This snow will be very wet and heavy. This may lead to health issues when shoveling. If you have health problems or are elderly, you should not shovel this snow.
A Winter Storm Warning for heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. Only travel in an emergency. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency.
