Last night in high school hoops, Coldwater swept to victory at Charlotte in the season finale for both the Cardinal boys and girls, while Union City split at Homer, Quincy was swept by Concord, and Bronson fell to Cassopolis.
In boys basketball, Coldwater ended its regular season with a 79-65 win at the Charlotte Dome to finish with an 11-9 overall record, 8-6 in the Interstate 8, tied for 4th with surging Pennfield. Collin Warner returned to the lineup after a two-week absence and scored a team-high 20 points en route to being named our McDonald’s Player of the Game. Gage McGuire added 16 points and 6 rebounds, and Brady Beckhusen and Zach Murphy had 11 apiece. The next action for the Cardinals won’t come for another 12 days, when they open up District play in Paw Paw on March 9th.
A Concord 3-point bucket with under 4 seconds left in the game lifted the Yellow Jackets to a 64-61 win at Quincy. Brandon Gary led the Orioles with 18 points and 7 rebounds, while Nathan Karney added 15 points and 5 assists and Quinn Eifrid scored 12. Quincy slips to 11-7 overall, 8-4 in the Big 8.
Union City was a 55-45 winner at Homer, with 15 points and 6 rebounds from Jalen Boes to pace the Chargers. Elijah Harris added 13 points and 6 boards while Colin Kreger scored 11 as the Chargers improve to 14-4 overall, 8-2 in the Big 8.
Bronson lost to visiting Cassopolis 81-57 despite a double-double for Jonah Klingler with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Luis DePaz scored 11 and Noah Roberts had 10 points and 5 assists as the Vikings drop to 3-15 overall, 1-9 in the BCS East.
Tekonsha’s scheduled game against Burr Oak was postponed and rescheduled for Monday night at Tekonsha.
The girls basketball regular season wrapped up last night, with Districts beginning on Monday. In Charlotte, Coldwater led 18-4 after the first quarter and never looked back on their way to a 44-30 win against the Orioles to close out the season at 12-8 overall and in 4th place in the Interstate 8 at 8-6. Our McDonald’s Player of the Game, Jamie Wellet, followed up her double-double on Tuesday with a game-high 12 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists. Kendall Galloway scored 11 and Malorie Rzepka had 10 points and 6 boards after both were kept out of the scoring column Tuesday night. The Lady Cards begin tournament play Monday night hosting Paw Paw in the first round of the Class B Coldwater District.
Quincy lost to visiting Concord 62-30 in a game rescheduled from Thursday night. Zoe Aseltine led the Orioles with 10 points, while Allison Parshall had a team-high 10 rebounds. The Orioles finish the regular season at 2-18 overall, 2-12 in the Big 8, and will entertain Big 8 champion Homer Monday night in the opening round of the Class C Quincy District.
Speaking of the Trojans, they defeated visiting Union City 55-13 in a game that was also rescheduled from Thursday night. Autumn Carpenter had 8 points and 8 rebounds for the Chargers as they finish the season at 3-17 overall, 2-12 in the Big 8. They take on Reading Wednesday night in the semifinals of the Class C Quincy District.
The second season for high school bowlers began yesterday with the MHSAA Team Regionals. In the Division 2 Vicksburg Regional at Continental Lanes, Coldwater won the boys regional with a combined total from 6 Baker games and 3 regular games of 4062. Sturgis was second, and Marshall third. The top three finishers move on to the state finals next weekend. On the girls side, Coldwater just missed moving on to next weekend with a 4th place finish, behind regional champ Jackson, Charlotte, and Sturgis. The Lady Cards rolled a team score of 3639. At the Division 4 Hackett Catholic Prep Regional at Pinz in Kalamazoo, Bronson’s first-ever boys varsity team finished 4th with a total of 3270, just missing out on a trip to the team state finals. Niles Brandywine won the Regional, followed by Ravenna and Morely Stanwood. The Bowling Regionals conclude today with singles action.
