UNION CITY, MI (WTVB) – The MHSAA Boys Basketball District Finals will be played Friday night, with one team from Branch County still alive in this year’s tournament.
Union City will face Homer in the championship game of the Class C District hosted by the Chargers at the McNett Fieldhouse. Tip-off is scheduled for 6pm Friday night; our pregame coverage begins Friday at 5:30pm, right after the Evening Journal. Union City eliminated Quincy on Wednesday by a 49-32 score to improve its record to 16-5. Homer comes into the game at 14-8; they opened up their tournament run by beating Reading 67-37 on Monday, but needed overtime to get past Bronson on Wednesday 68-55. The Chargers have already defeated the Trojans twice this season – 48-32 on January 21st at home, and 55-45 at Homer on February 26th. The winner moves on to the Class C Gobles Regional Monday night at 8 to face either Niles Brandywine or Bridgman.
In some other District Final games from around the area, Interstate 8 champion Marshall will face Comstock in the championship game of the Class B Comstock District, while Paw Paw, the team that eliminated Coldwater on Wednesday, will host Three Rivers in another Class B District Final.
Thursday night in girls basketball, Interstate 8 champ Marshall advanced to the state Quarterfinals next Tuesday after beating Otsego 57-37 in the championship game of the Class B Harper Creek Regional. Interstate 8 runner-up Jackson Northwest was eliminated by East Lansing 56-52 in the finals of the Class A Mason Regional. And Pittsford remains undefeated after thumping Hillsdale Academy 81-19 in the championship game of the Class D Lenawee Christian Regional.
