STURGIS, MI (WTVB) – One occupant of a Sturgis home had to be taken to Sturgis Hospital for minor burns and smoke inhalation following a fire early Wednesday morning.
The fire at 318 South Clay Street was reported at about 1:25 a.m. Sturgis Police Officers were first to arrive. They tried to enter the structure but were forced to retreat due to smoke and heat.
A search of the home by firefighters, who faced heavy smoke and heat, confirmed that everybody had gotten out after there was an initial report that two persons were trapped inside.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
The fire was contained to one room and it was quickly extinguished. The second floor of the home sustained a large amount of damage.
