COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) -The Branch County Association of REALTORS is warning local residents about recent real estate scams through Craig’s List.
The Associations says there have been several people who have responded to for rent ads on local properties only to learn later the properties are not for rent.
The scammers ask people to send the first and last month’s rent and in some cases a security deposit to the advertiser and once the money is received directions will be given where to obtain the key.
They say a recent scam involved a owner occupied home on Rose Lake where the owner had no intention of renting.
In other cases, the home was vacant.
The Realtors Association reminds you to never send money to someone claiming to be out of town or the country for a property to rent or to buy on a land contract. You have to make sure the offer is legit. Call your any local REALTOR to see what they know about the property.
You should also check public records to confirm who the owner of record is and contact that person to see if they are truly renting the property.
If you have any questions or concerns, contact the Branch County Association of REALTORS office at (517) 278-3192.
