COLDWATER, MI (WTVB) – The Coldwater Cardinal varsity baseball team collected 26 hits and pulled to within one game of first place in the Interstate 8 on Tuesday night as they swept Charlotte 18-0 and 15-5 in a doubleheader at Lowe Field. Coldwater ended the first game with a 15 run fourth inning capped off by a grand slam by Austin Krzeminski. Brandon Lewis had three RBI’s in the opener.
Brendan Spangler had five hits including a home run in the second game while he and Collin Torrey both drove in three runs. Kameron Miller and Collin Torrey were the winning pitchers.
In the battle for the Interstate 8 baseball championship:
-Marshall and Harper Creek split, with the Redhawks winning the opener 2-0 and the Beavers taking the nightcap 6-2-Lumen Christi swept Pennfield 6-2 and 9-6
So in the I-8 baseball standings:· Marshall – 11-3· Lumen Christi – 11-3· Coldwater – 10-2· Harper Creek – 7-4
Coldwater has a makeup DH at Harper on Thursday, and if the Cardinals sweep, they will have the league championship outright. A split would result in a 3-way tie for the league title with Marshall, Lumen, and Coldwater.
Union City 15, Reading 0 (1st game)Union City 9, Reading 0 (2nd game)
Seth Bruce and Colton Johns were the winning pitchers as they combined for 23 strike outs. Johns threw his second no hitter of the season as he whiffed 16 in the nightcap while Bruce had seven K’s in the opener. The 16 strike outs for Johns were the most by a Union City pitcher in at least eight years. Bransom Turley drove in three runs in the first game for the Chargers while Colin Kreger and Johns doubled in the second game.
—GIRLS SOFTBALL—
Coldwater 4, Charlotte 2 (1st game)Coldwater 4, Charlotte 1 (2nd game)
Coldwater swept Charlotte 4-2 and 4-1 and gained a share of the Interstate 8 championship as they improved to 23-5 overall. Darlene Horn and Tyler Scheid were the winning pitchers. Payton Watson had three hits in the first game while Katie Stanton doubled. Stacy Guzy had two hits in the nightcap.
Western and Northwest split, with the Mounties winning the opener 7-4 and the Panthers taking the nightcap 13-1 in 5 innings
And in the I-8 softball standings:· Coldwater – 12-2· Western – 12-2· Northwest – 8-4
Homer 7, Quincy 4 (1st game)Homer 15, Quincy 12 (2nd game)
Quincy was swept by Homer in a battle for first place in the Big 8. The Trojans won by scores of 7-4 and 15-12. Hannah Econonmou homered in the opener for Quincy. Katie Swafford had a grand slam in the night cap while Katie Newbery had four stolen bases. Quincy is now 8-4 in the Big 8 and 17-9 overall.

Coldwater finished 5-2 in Interstate 8 meets heading into the league meet which will decide the overall league title.

Cardinal winners were Breanna Eddy in the long jump, Malorie Rzepka in the high jump with a new personal record of five feet, Hannah Parrish in the shot put, Jordan Bouse in the discus and Jasmine Wellet with two new personal records of 16.59 in the 100 hurdles and 49.72 in the 300 hurdles. Coldwater also won the 400 relay as Wellet, Samantha Rodesiler, Rzepka and Allison Butler set a new personal record with a time of 54.24
