KALAMAZOO, MI (WTVB) – Suspected mass murderer Jason Dalton interrupted testimony from shooting victim Tiana Carruthers during his preliminary hearing Friday morning in Kalamazoo. Just when it seemed like things had calmed down, Dalton started to speak again which upset Carruthers further and she burst into tears. A recess was called as deputies dragged Dalton out of the courtroom.
An attempt was made to set up a secure room in the courthouse so that Dalton could take part in the rest of the hearing by a video feed. But due to security concerns, Dalton was taken back to the Kalamazoo County Jail where there are two secure rooms with live video feeds to the courtroom.
The preliminary hearing is to determine if there is enough evidence to send the case to trial.
Dalton is facing 16 felonies following a shooting spree in February.
He is officially charged with six counts of open murder, two counts of assault with intent to commit murder and eight counts of using a firearm during the commission of a felony.
